Things You Must Know About Rock Drills

The construction sector relies heavily on drills for various tasks, including well-drilling, mining, foundation-setting, and excavating rocks and minerals. Using a rock drill, you can quickly and easily bore through solid rock that would be difficult to split apart by hand. Pneumatic drills for rocks are widely used and renowned for their sturdiness and reliability when it comes to blasting rock surfaces apart to make them more manageable for a crusher.

The History of Rock Drilling

Manual drilling was the standard technique for underground mines before the advent of mechanisation. As one person turned the drill, another swung the hammer, breaking up the rock. Miners are largely responsible for the development of modern rock drill technology.

It is widely agreed that J. J. Couch invented the rock drill in Philadelphia in 1849. Rock-drilling technology Inventions are credited to the Mont Cenis Tunnel (between Italy and France) constructed in the 1850s and the Hoosac Tunnel (in Massachusetts, USA) in the 1860s. Atlas Copco, a pioneer in the industry, released the first compressed air-powered rock drill in 1898.

What Can You Do With a Rock Drill?

At the outset of the mining operation, holes are drilled into the rock with drills so that explosives can be charged and detonated later in a sequence. However, their primary uses are mineral prospecting, well digging, and foundation preparation.

The three most prevalent techniques for drilling into the rock are as follows:

  • The construction, mining, and quarrying industries are the most common users of top hammer drilling. When using a top hammer drill, the hammer strikes the drill rods or tubes, transferring a percussion force to the bit. The rocks are broken using a drifter (hammer) mounted to the end of a long rod called a drill string. The necessary equipment is easily available and, in many cases, less expensive than DTH or rotary rigs.
  • Drilling water wells, oil wells, and blast holes in mines are typical applications of the down-the-hole (DTH) technique. These devices feature a hammer at the end of a drill string that is used to do the actual drilling. Continuously pushing the drilling hammer into the rock as the drill string slowly spins. DTH drills are favoured over other methods like rotary ones because they are considered superior in several ways. Some benefits include the ability to drill in nearly any terrain, low dust emissions, a range of drill bit diameters, and precise, clean holes. This drill produces much less noise and vibrations than other options, making it ideal for projects in cities and crowded areas.
  • Boreholes can be drilled with various rotational techniques, but they are most commonly employed in underground mining. Compression breaks the rock as the drill bit is spun against the bottom under severe strain. This machine’s versatility makes it a good option for many building projects because it can be adjusted to work in any orientation. The fast processing time, pinpoint accuracy, and excellent output are just a few of the many advantages.

What About Pneumatic Rocks drills?

The pressurised air is the driving force behind a pneumatic rock drill. They have significantly improved their drilling skills thanks to cutting-edge technology. Pneumatic drills are the way to go when looking to increase output at an established quarry.

Advantages of Pneumatic Drills

  1. Cost-effective.
  2. Less frequent and simpler repairs.
  3. Increased output.

If your manufacturing needs are modest, a pneumatic rock drill should suffice. Pneumatic drills have the added benefit of being simple to service, requiring fewer repair specialists to keep them operational. However, a hydraulic system is something to consider if you have significant production needs or expect your production to increase.
